During the Fetch Kansas City conference in Kansas City, Missouri, 

honored its 3 grand prize winners of the 2024 Hospital Design360 Competition. This year’s winners were Blue Cross Animal Clinic in the larger than 8000 sq feet category, Habitat Veterinary Hospital, for the 3500 to 800 sq ft category, and Vet Vision Center, for the smaller than 3500 sq ft category.

 and the Fetch Veterinary conferences. It's an absolute honor to stand before you today as we celebrate excellence in one of the most vital aspects of veterinary medicine: hospital design. This afternoon, we recognize not just the bricks and mortars that make up these remarkable facilities, but also the vision, the dedication, the true obstacles and creativity that have brought them to life,” stated Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, 

’s chief veterinary officer, as he welcomed the crowd to the event.

The hospital design contest, which will be celebrating its 60th year in 2025, awards both grand prize winners and multiple merit winners for their hospital design features that make them stick out as well as provide the best experiences for staff, clients, and patients. Throughout the lunch, each of the 3 grand prize winners was invited to present their hospital, talk about their journeys, and highlight aspects of the design that they were proud of or excited to showcase to the room. From transforming old diners to building from the ground up, each hospital brought to the table an incredible design that improved the standard and access to care for patients in their area.

One of the winning hospitals, Vet Vision Center, highlighted the fact that from previously attending Fetch conference lectures and reading articles on hospital design dos and don'ts, she was able to find the perfect pre-existing building for her clinic. The building was a former diner that was popular and was in a great location for her town, Lambertville, New Jersey. After ups and downs with the rebuilding, including discovering an addition to the building put on by the former owners did not have a foundation and a crushed septic tank, she was able to maintain the original structure of the building and even add additional natural light options to brighten up as many spaces in the hospital as possible.

A piece of Shelby Reinstein, DVM, MS, DACVO, owner of Vet Vision Center, had for audience attendees is to create a hospital for staff and patients but to not forget to make some type of moment for clients as well.

“If I can leave you guys with anything it is to create a fun moment for clients. Create a social moment, right? A place where someone's going to tag your hospital, or someone's going to take a selfie. Whether that be the case or not, I've seen those cool treat-yourself walls, right? Just put something fun in there and make it exciting for your clients. Going that extra mile for your clients, because they're cool matters, right? We talk a lot about the design for the animals and all that, but ultimately, most pets don't walk in by themselves. You want your clients to have that experience where you're going to provide them with excellent care,” Reinstein explained.

Honoring the 2024 Hospital Design360 Competition winners

Your pet's gut is teeming with life, a bustling metropolis of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms collectively known as the microbiome. A balanced microbiome benefits a pet directly-within the gut and indirectly-by impacting other systems or organs within the body. Within the gut, a healthy microbiome is essential for optimal digestion and nutrient absorption. Beneficial microbes in the gut ferment and digest fiber in your pet's food that would otherwise be excreted. This process ensures that pets absorb as many nutrients as possible from their food. A healthy microbiome also functions to enhance immune function and help regulate energy metabolism among others.

On the other hand, an imbalance in the microbiome, or dysbiosis, has been associated with multiple health conditions that affect multiple organ systems including chronic enteropathies, atopic dermatitis, chronic kidney disease, behavior and obesity to name a few.

 Here we'll explore nutritional solutions to foster a thriving microbiome in our dogs and cats.

Probiotics: introducing beneficial bacteria

Probiotics are live microorganisms that may confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. They can help restore balance in the gut microbiome, particularly after disruptions caused by antibiotics or illness. Probiotic supplements for dogs and cats typically contain strains of 

These supplements can be found in various forms, including powders, capsules, and treats. Regularly incorporating probiotics into your pet's diet may potentially support digestive health, reduce gastrointestinal upset, and enhance immune function. Though promising, there are significant challenges associated with using probiotics. First, delivering live bacteria to the right part of the gut can be difficult. Depending upon the specific strain of bacteria and the form it’s being delivered in, the probiotic can be destroyed by the acidic environment of the stomach.

 Secondly, to be the most effective, the host the probiotic is derived from should be the same species as the recipient (i.e. a cat probiotic should be derived from cats).

 In this instance, the probiotics do not colonize in the gut and must be given consistently in order to maintain viable amounts of the bacterial species in the gut.

 Additionally, probiotics are not a one-size-fits-all option. Often, they are effective in one species or another or only under certain conditions. For example, one specific probiotic strain has shown efficacy in decreasing episodes of diarrhea in shelter cats, but the same effect was not seen in dogs.

 Other strains of probiotics have shown efficacy in improving gut flora and stool consistency in dogs with non-specific dietary sensitivities.

 Research of the use of probiotics in companion animal nutrition has shown some promising results but requires further investigation for targeted and sustained results.

Prebiotics are non-digestible dietary fibers naturally found in fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, serving as nourishment for beneficial gut bacteria. Common prebiotics include beta-glucans, inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and galactooligosaccharides (GOS). When fermented and digested by the microbiome, these fibers yield end products that can positively impact pet health both directly within the gut and indirectly systemically. Prebiotics directly contribute to the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria already present in the gut, improve gut barrier function and improve stool quality and consistency.

 Indirectly, prebiotics have been shown to reduce inflammation, enhance immune response and improve mineral absorption.

 A recent literature review found that prebiotics benefit healthy adult and senior dogs by improving intestinal and immunological health.

 Additionally, diets that contain prebiotic fiber bundles have been shown to help manage acute and chronic large bowel diarrhea

Use of prebiotics is not fraught with as many challenges as feeding probiotics, mainly because fibers are easily incorporated into pet foods, and all pets have bacteria and other microbes in their gut that will digest and ferment those fibers. The most frequent hurdle faced is identifying optimal ingredient amounts and identifying interindividual variability, which requires further research.

 However, even if the inclusion is not precisely optimized, prebiotics are functional foods and have been shown to be safe and effective for supporting overall gut health.

Endogenous postbiotics: harnessing microbial metabolites

Endogenous postbiotics are the bioactive compounds produced by microbes during fermentation and digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. These postbiotics are emerging as the primary driver behind the beneficial impact pro- and prebiotics have on gut and overall pet health. These metabolites include short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), enzymes, peptides, and vitamins. For example, SCFAs are a potent “food” for colonocytes within the gut. When the colonocytes have the nutrition they require, the mucosal layer is more robust, and the cell junctions are tighter, which promotes a healthier gut that is better able to absorb nutrients from food for the pet. Other postbiotics, like enzymes, peptides, and vitamins, have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects.

 A recent study sought to determine the impact of supplementing postbiotics on health markers in beagle dogs. The results showed that postbiotic supplementation reduced serum triglyceride levels, cholesterol levels, uric acid levels and circulating inflammatory markers.

 The supplementation also increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and reduced the relative abundance of harmful bacteria, indicating improved intestinal health in dogs.

 Though the study had a relatively small sample size (12 dogs), the research shows promise in future exploration of postbiotic supplementation.

A well-nourished microbiome is the cornerstone of a pet’s overall health. Understanding the importance of the microbiome and incorporating appropriate nutritional solutions such as prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, is a proactive way we can support the gut and overall health of dogs and cats.

Nurturing the microbiome

Neogen Corporation, an international food safety company and manufacturer of BotVax B, the only USDA-approved vaccine for botulism Type B in equines, is partnering with US Equestrian to enhance equine care solutions for veterinarians and horse owners, according to a news release.

 Neogen and US Equestrian will collaborate to create educational materials for members, including best practices, prevention tecniques, and recommended treatment protocols for equine botulism.

"Neogen has been part of the equestrian community for more than 30 years and has focused efforts on providing quality horse health products, from wound care and vaccines to genetic testing and biosecurity solutions," Bill Moroney, chief executive officer at US Equestrian, said in a news release.

 "Neogen's commitment to research on equine botulism is important and aligns with the goal of providing our members with quality resources and access to experts to help them care for their horses. We welcome Neogen as a sponsor of US Equestrian and look forward to working together."

Equine botulism is a neuromuscular disease in horses that leads to worsening muscle weakness and paralysis, often resulting in death.

The disease is caused by the neurotoxin botulinum, which is one of the most potent toxins known.

 There are 8 different types of botulism, each producing toxins with varying levels of potency. Although the disease can affect all mammals, horses are among the most vulnerable species. These animals are most commonly affected by botulism types A, B, and C.

Horses can acquire the disease by consuming feed or hay contaminated with the toxin or with the bacteria. Although less common, animals can also acquire the disease through wound infections. Additionally, botulinum can be found in soil.

The disease is often described as a silent killer.

The primary clinical sign of equine botulism is flaccid paralysis, which is weakness with decreased muscle tone. Initially, the condition may present as a stiff, stilted gait, which then advances to muscle tremors, weakness, and eventually result in recumbency, where the horse is unable to stand. Other signs include

Paralysis of the eyelids and/or tongue: Dilated pupils and weak blinking; difficulty chewing and swallowing

Paralysis of the respiratory muscles, resulting in death

According to the University of Florida, horses with equine botulism will have normal mentation—they will be aware of their surroundings and often want to eat—which distinguishes the disease from other neurological disorders.

“Education is a critical component to help horse owners understand and prevent this deadly disease," Renee Hall, head of Pet Health and Wellness for Neogen, said in a news release.

 "Horse owners, if they understand the threat of botulism, know that the culprit is not just round bales of hay. Botulism can be found in many forage types and cannot be seen or smelled. We all know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

According to Neogen, US Equestrian members will have access to Neogen’s and US Equestrian’s free resources this fall.

Veterinary Innovative Partners (VIP), a network encompassing nearly 70 veterinarian-owned hospitals across 12 states, has named Emily Hubbard, DVM, its new chief medical officer. Prior to her new appointment, Hubbard was the director of veterinary quality at Banfield Pet Hospital. Her background includes experience as a single-unit and multi-unit medical director. In her new role at VIP, Hubbard will manage the medical department, enhance operational efficiency, develop policies, and support veterinary training.

"I’m honored to join the VIP team during this exciting period of growth and innovation," said Hubbard in a news release.

Col. Stephanie Mont was recently appointed the next commander of Womack Army Medical Center (WAMC) at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. In 2001, Mont obtained her veterinary degree from Texas A&M University and joined the army as a Veterinary Corps officer afterwards. She earned her master’s in public health from the University of Hawaii in 2008 and completed a Master’s in strategic studies at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 2020.

Col. Mont is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and was part of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Future Leaders class of 2014 to 2015. From 2017 to 2020, Mont held the position of command veterinarian and chief of future medical operations at US Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, where she focused on integrating One Health principles into their operations.

Col. Mont also made history as the first veterinary preventive medicine officer to direct the Department of Defense’s LTC Daniel E. Holland Military Working Dog Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) appointed Catherine Ainsworth BVSc(Hons), MVSc, MBA, GAICD, as its board chair for a 4-year term.

 Ainsworth has expertise in public sector governance and in managing agricultural research for livestock, grains, and horticulture industries, according to the APVMA.

“Dr Ainsworth has significant experience in corporate governance, risk management, regulatory matters, financial management, agriculture and public health,” Murray Watt, minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said in a news report.

 “She has extensive experience in administration and board roles as the director of Racing Analytical Services, and the director and deputy chair of Harness Racing Victoria and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.”

Ainsworth is also involved with the Victorian Animal Welfare Advisory Council, the Biosecurity Reference Group, and the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) Animal Health Accreditation Advisory Council.

Anthony Germinaro will be stepping into the role of field veterinary business development manager for the for the Southwest Region of the US at PetVivo Holdings, a biomedical device company for companion animals and animal athletes. Germinaro has held roles as a lead ultrasound technician and practice manager, giving him experience in veterinary clinics and sales of animal health products at Banfield Pet Hospital, VetMed, Anvive Life Sciences, Black Mountain Veterinary Cardiology, and Dr Fossum’s Pet Care, according to a news release.

“Joining PetVivo as a new Field Veterinary Business Development Manager is an incredible opportunity for me to continue my passion, leverage my industry knowledge, and positively impact the quality of life for horses and companion animals,” said Germinaro in a news release.

Emily McCobb, PetSmart Charities endowed chair in accessible veterinary care, University of California, Davis

Emily McCobb, DVM, MS, DACVAA, has been appointed as the first PetSmart Charities endowed chair in accessible veterinary care at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), School of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to her appointment, McCobb was the clinical associate professor of anesthesiology and director of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s shelter medicine program at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

McCobb’s new role will help ensure that pets and their families can access the health care they need by fostering innovation throughout the veterinary system, according to a news release. “"I'm extremely honored to have been selected. UC Davis is the pinnacle of veterinary education and a school we all look up to," McCobb said in the news release.

"It's time to reshape our profession and drive efforts like those in human medicine to ensure more pets get the care they need to thrive. That's a lens I look forward to sharing at UC Davis – not all pet parents are privileged, but as veterinarians we took an oath to care for 

animals. I'm also grateful PetSmart Charities had the vision to sustain this kind of support. It'll inspire other universities to launch programs designed to expand care models that serve a wider array of families,” she continued.

: As someone who's teaching, where are the gaps?

: The gaps do start at veterinary school, because if you don't have a clue when you're coming out of school about your requirements and expectation, it's hard to understand the oversight, and we don't. We're not likely, as a new graduate, to go and get education and control substance compliance, because we're more likely to try to figure out how to be a better dermatologist or dentist or surgeon, etc, from that standpoint. So this really does need to start at the university level and oversee the importance of it, and explain the importance of it, not just from a pharmaceutical standpoint, but from a regulatory compliance standpoint
