Berg is the Chewy Innovator of the Month (and 2024 VMX Technician of the Year), because her efforts go beyond education. She strives to make a profound, lasting impact on the quality of veterinary dental care throughout the industry. The 

® editorial staff caught up with Berg for an interview to hear how she wound up at the forefront of dental education.

dvm360: Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your work with Beyond the Crown?

: I'm a registered veterinary technician and a veterinary technician specialist in dentistry. I live in Lawrence, Kansas, and have been in the field for over 31 years. All of that time has been in dentistry in one way or another. 12 years ago, I started my full-time business, Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education, which helps educate veterinary technicians and veterinarian teams on proper dental procedures. We do this through videos, in-clinic training, and other resources available for the teams.

dvm360: Was there a pivotal moment that led you to start Beyond the Crown?

: My background started in veterinary dental research, working on companion animal products for the oral cavity for about 13 years. Then, I moved to practice for seven years as a dental technician and practice manager. During that time, I did some in-clinic trainings and found that I loved it. I enjoyed working with teams and helping them better understand dentistry. Despite my fears, I had multiple people encourage me to pursue this full-time. The pivotal moment came at the Western Veterinary Conference 12 years ago, after a particularly tough week at the practice, when I decided to start Beyond the Crown full-time. The response I got was overwhelmingly positive, with many people saying I should have done this years ago.

dvm360: Which aspect of your work do you enjoy the most: hands-on practice or teaching?

: I enjoy getting my hands dirty; there's nothing more rewarding than taking a nasty oral cavity and making it healthy again. I miss working with clients and talking to them. That was one area I really enjoyed in practice. However, now I have a bigger impact by helping thousands of animals get better oral care through training and educating veterinary teams. It was a no-brainer to start working with teams to get more patients better oral care.

dvm360: What does success look like for you in your work with Beyond the Crown?

: Success for me is a combination of things. It's not about the money but the impact I have. For instance, a smaller corporate group I worked with increased their dental revenue by over 32% after my training. Hearing feedback from people at conferences who tell me how much I've helped them is incredibly gratifying. Additionally, being called back to the same practice to train new members and fine-tune their skills due to the high turnover in veterinary medicine is a mark of success. I'm there for them, whether it's in-clinic training, discussing equipment, or handling specific situations.

dvm360: How do you see mentorship fitting into dental education?

: Everything I do right now is mentoring, even if I haven't officially labeled it as such. When I work with teams to help them understand procedures and their importance, that's mentoring. At conferences, having people come up to me and say I've inspired them or been their mentor, even if I don't know them personally, is very rewarding. Mentoring plays a significant role in my organization.

dvm360: Can you share a success story from your work?

: One of the most gratifying stories is from working with a smaller corporate group. After my initial training, they saw a significant increase in their dental revenue. The feedback from teams and seeing the improvements they make is incredibly rewarding. Being able to return to practices to train new members and refine existing practices is also a testament to the ongoing success and impact of my work.

dvm360: How has the reception been to your training and educational programs?

: The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Teams are excited to learn about dentistry, and I strive to keep my training sessions fun and engaging. Hearing from people who have made significant changes in their practices based on my training and seeing their excitement is incredibly fulfilling. I'm proud to provide ongoing support, whether through in-clinic training, answering questions about equipment, or discussing specific cases.

What sign should colleagues and employers look for to identify when a veterinarian or even a clinical support staff member might be struggling and how people around can help?

: I wish, in my dream [universe], everybody in the veterinary space would be QPR certified. I think in terms of signs, just what you  mentioned we have a different couple different categories. We have to direct verbal cues where we you know, someone will say something like, 'Oh, I just want my life to be over, [or] I just want to end this, or I wish I wasn't here.' And then we have some more indirect verbal cues around maybe 'I just can't go on anymore' or 'I wish I wasn't waking up tomorrow.'

And then, you know, the next category, this is where your case falls, enters the behavior cues that, you know something just changes. Maybe it's a change of mood, and that can be being reclusive, as you described, but it could also be the opposite, that someone is suddenly very frustrated or has anger outburst. Because in a way, really, what's happening is that the emotions that are happening or the feelings that are happening within that person, they try to come out right? And that's either shutting down or coming out maybe through anger. So really listening to your gut, right? I think that's what it comes down to. If you think something is not normal for that person, that's probably a good indicator that there could be something going on.

Healing the healers: Mental health in the veterinary profession

The FDA recently shared progress on its Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda (AVIA), including a pilot program to address unmet animal needs, optimizing and updating regulatory processes, and entering into a contract with a 3rd party to assess the FDA’s animal drug approval process.

 According to the FDA, the AVIA aims to ensure the strongest product development pipelines that provide the necessary products to support veterinarians, animal owners, agricultural producers, the food system, and public health initiatives.

Released last fall, the AVIA contains 4 objectives with supporting actions for how the FDA can foster and drive innovation to better protect human and animal health. These objective are as follows

Support technologies and products that address high-priority needs

Align regulatory pathways to the modern landscape

Enhance our One Health workforce for the future of innovation

Identify and address gaps specific to new technologies and emerging health threats

As part of the AVIA, the FDA began a pilot project for the ‘Accelerating the Development of Veterinary and Animal Needs’ (ADVANce) program. This project will help tackle unmet needs in animal health, such as diseases lacking FDA-approved treatments. ADVANce’s priority is to pinpoint barriers in developing products for preventing or treating histomoniasis. This disease, otherwise known as blackhead disease, is a threat to turkeys across the country, and often results in their death.

The FDA has also included additional features to its Veterinary Innovation Program (VIP), a program that aims to facilitate progress in developing innovating animal products.

 As part of its expansion, the FDA implemented VIP Plus, which provides tools and support to those developing intentional genomic alterations in animals and animal cells, tissues, and cell-or tissue-based products.

The agency also made revisions to its guidance documents ‘Heritable Intentional Genomic Alterations in Animals: Risk-Based Approach’ and ‘Heritable Intentional Genomic Alterations in Animals: The Approval Process,’ to provide clarification to the FDA’s approach to regulating genomic alterations in animals.

“The updated guidance documents underscore the agency’s commitment to further modernize its approach to evaluating and supporting the development of innovative animal and veterinary products to increase regulatory flexibility, predictability and efficiency,” Tristan Colonius, DVM, MPA, DACVPM, chief veterinary officer and deputy director for science policy at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, wrote in a report.

According to Colonius, the organization has been encouraging sponsors of novel products for addition to animals’ food or drinking water to contact the FDA during early product development process to allow for collaboration. The agency also went through with its plan to withdraw the Program Policy Procedures Manual (PPM) 1240.3605, Regulating Animal Foods with Drug Claims.

Additionally, the FDA has contracted Eagle Hill Consulting, an independent management consulting film, to carry out a thorough evaluation of its animal drug approval procedures, according to a news report.

 “A healthy organization engages in continual self-evaluation and improvement, and this assessment is one part of that ongoing effort,” wrote Colonius in the report.

The assessment with Eagle Hill Consulting will involve consultation with agency and industry representatives. The FDA plans to hold a public workshop to share the findings of the final assessment report. This report, along with the public meeting, is expected to be completed by December 31, 2025.

FDA announces ongoing progress in its Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda

Eric D. Garcia, founder of Simply Done Tech Solutions, will join Mary Gardner, DVM, cofounder and chief information officer of Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice & In-Home Euthanasia, to deliver the keynote address on day 1 of the conference. Kwane Stewart, DVM, founder of Project Street Vet, will take the keynote stage on day 2. On day 3, the keynote speaker will be Kris Otteman, DVM, DABVP, CAVA, a shelter medicine and veterinary forensics expert.

Collectively, these speakers epitomize the compassion for which the veterinary profession is known. Their planned lectures are as follows:

Garcia and Gardner will deliver the talk “Evolving Together Through Friendship, Accountability, and the Ever- Present Learning Curve.” The keynote address will draw on their personal and professional experiences. They will talk about the “transformative power of friendship” and highlight how a strong bond can help individuals overcome professional challenges.

Named the 2023 CNN Hero of the Year, Stewart’s keynote address will be “Why We Don’t Stop: The Unique Animal That Is a Veterinarian.” According to Stewart, veterinarians are built like no other care professionals. Their gifts of empathy, compassion, and ambition help improve the lives of animals, he said. Stewart will focus on well-being and finding tools for self-preservation in a profession where talent can be a detriment to longevity.

The conference’s third keynote speaker will discuss the complexities of shelter medicine while confronting uncomfortable truths and challenging the status quo. In the talk “Seeking Truth & Unleashing Unpopular Perspectives in Shelter Medicine and Animal Cruelty,” Otteman will present ethical dilemmas about euthanasia, pet ownership, and quality of care. She also will explore answers to important questions.

Sharing stories of compassion on the West Coast

Along with our 2024 Hospital Design360 grand prize winners, dvm360 has also named 8 merit award recipients. This year, the Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix, Arizona; Chi Animal Hospital in Reddick, Florida; and Partners Animal Hospital West Loop in Chicago, Illinois, were merit winners for facilities larger than 8000 sq ft. 

All Creatures Great and Small in Downers Grove, Illinois, West Davis Veterinary Center in Davis, California, and Red Barn Animal Hospital in Gilberts, Illinois, won for facilities ranging from 3500 to 8000 sq ft. 

Lastly, Vetique in Chicago, Illinois, and Pure Paws Veterinary Care in New York, New York, won for spaces smaller than 3500 sq ft.

Located on a campus of over 72,000 sq ft, the Arizona Humane Society complex contains state-of-the-art medical, adoption, and education spaces that allow the team to provide the best care to pets in need and help them find their forever homes. To create the best hospital for their staff, patients, clients, and community, the team dedicated time to tour animal shelters that opened their doors to them. During the tours, the team was able to handpick features and aspects of different hospitals to create spaces in their hospital, such as 11 animal ambulances to transport sick and injured pets; and a small, dedicated laboratory. They also have a supply space for parvovirus-infected puppies with a separate entrance and an outside area, enabling infected animals to go outside without the risk of spreading the disease. 

Besides gleaning ideas from the animal shelter visits, Steven R. Hansen, DVM, president and CEO of Arizona Humane Society, took inspiration from Disney after touring its facility years ago. He created a viewing area of the surgical suite where people who are on community tours of the hospital can see animals being cared for in real time. 

Through the hospital’s design, the Arizona Humane Society can continue its mission of educating the public on animal welfare issues. The updated complex also helps the hospital treat the massive influx of pets they see regularly. Hansen told dvm360 exclusively that the society’s team was able to get almost 1000 animals adopted within 10 days. The campus also has an onsite adoption area where treated animals can be taken into a kennel for community members to visit and possibly adopt.

Chi Animal Hospital opted for an open floor plan to facilitate teamwork and create a calm and welcoming environment. The hospital also opted not to have a traditional waiting room so they can escort pets directly to an exam room to help minimize their stress and noise. For Chi Animal Hospital, noise control was crucial; their walls are triple insulated, and offsite phone answer systems help reduce stress-inducing sounds. The recovery wards have sound-dampening glass walls that allow pets to see what is happening and quietly hear staff but not be disturbed. 

The hospital also serves as a teaching hospital for Chi University and regularly hosts tours for veterinary professionals from around the globe. The hospital’s design allows those professionals to see how seriously the facility considers staff and client well-being, enabling them to leave with ideas of how to make their own clinics less stressful. The hospital also contains smart speakers to enable seamless communication between staff and clients without leaving pets alone. Along with the details for the medical spaces, the team created a comfort room with a Zen garden that serves as a serene place for end-of-life care. The hospital also focused on being environmentally friendly with solar panels, dimmable LED lighting, and motion sensors to promote sustainability and well-being.

When Partners Animal Hospital West Loop was selecting a site, the team found it challenging to f ind one that would ease traffic, make parking less difficult, and have fewer space limitations for staff and clients. However, the team found a site that met all the needs of community and staff, including space to perform surgeries, grooming, and dentistry procedures, and with a major bonus—onsite parking. 

The 2-story building was designed to have one floor for hospitalized patients and the other for outpatient care to help ease the stress of patients and staff. The team also built a dog run, grooming cages, and cage banks enclosed in separate rooms on the second floor. To create a space that enhances efficiency, the team focused on traffic flow that gives staff access to the pharmacy from exam rooms, a hallway, and a waiting room. The team also wanted a separate exit for the comfort room, which is rare in the Chicago area. The exit can also serve as an entrance for pets suspected of having infectious diseases so they can be examined without crossing paths with other patients. 

Community satisfaction is essential to the team, who wanted to ensure their design features addressed their concerns, the top 2 being odor and noise. The team used artificial turf for dogs to relieve themselves, and they patrol the block twice a day to clean up any stray dog waste. The team also secures the parking lot overnight and uses cameras to monitor the building, the alley, and the front street to help support safety efforts in the community.

What distinguishes All Creatures Great and Small is the way it brings the home to its clinic. Owner Andrew Eisenberg, DVM, explained that the goal was to build a clinic inside a modern home. To do this, the team modeled the exterior design of the hospital after the styles of neighboring houses. The building also has a front porch/patio and other landscape features that contribute to giving the practice a house-like exterior. With tile that mimics a hardwood floor, a windowed fireplace and chimney at the front of the building, and a drop ceiling with finished wood beams to mimic an exposed wood beam home style, the hospital’s reception area emits a unique “living room” feel. The clinic’s reception also displays a feature wall that uses home-style finishing like shiplap. The vision here was to give the wall a higher end finish appearance, according to Eisenberg.

In the building’s main entrance, there is a water mirror and a beverage station in the lobby beneath a custom mural commissioned by local Chicago artist Anne Leuck. The artwork shows household pets of Eisenberg and Ken Eisenberg, DVM, and animals who have lived at the practice. Moreover, the clinic has a “frame” television in the lobby that displays rotating photographs of pets submitted by clients; as well as pets that have passed away, as a form of memorialization.

At West Davis Veterinary Center, the team put a lot of thought into the design of the space to make trips to the veterinarian less stressful for everyone. They created separate entrances for dogs and cats, with dedicated exam rooms, spaces, and treatment areas. The center’s cat hospital has exam tables with a cat-sized depression, a cat window walkway, warmer temperatures within the rooms, and cat housing with an optional outside view. The dog side has exam rooms that open to the outdoors, and dogs can enter through the waiting room or go directly into the exam rooms. The team sometimes uses garden areas for canine patients, a solution that came about during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other unique design features at West Davis Veterinary Center include the veterinarian office at the center of the hospital so the team can see treatment areas as needed, a warmed floor cage for post operation patient recovery, and glass for sound control that does not obstruct the view of patients who may be in distress. The onsite pharmacy has a small glass door that allows the receptionists to ask the team questions directly if needed. The hospital also created a space for technicians to have a moment of quiet and enjoy the natural light featured in most of the hospital, except for the bathrooms, laundry, and radiology rooms.

Owner Katie Stover, DVM, thought multiple steps ahead when creating her hospital. She aimed to upgrade the hospital’s first location and build Red Barn Animal Hospital with intended expansion space. This plan will enable her and her team to meet the evolving needs of their community by having space for future additional exam rooms, treatment spaces, boarding and grooming facilities, specialized rehabilitation services, and a pet exercise area. 

The current hospital uses soundproofing in its exam rooms to reduce stress and contain noise. It has separate areas for feline patients that contain hiding spots and a quiet environment to help improve their overall care. The team also put its full-service surgical suite in the back corner of the hospital, which has a dedicated preparation area and surgical supply storage space to help prevent contamination from nonsterile procedures or staff and pets from walking through the area. 

The hospital’s intensive care unit was built with a sizable 2-way window to enable close monitoring of patients without increasing stimulation, and their onsite isolation ward prevents disease from sick animals from spreading throughout the hospital. Outside medical areas, the clinic’s spacious upstairs gives the team space for bonding activities, plus a view of the community surroundings.

Giving their clinic a boutique style and feel, the owners of Vetique created a place to provide comfort and support for everyone who walks in the door. Their most notable feature is a wine bar where they have partnered with a fellow women-run business to provide Pawsecco for pets and other nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks for clients. The exam rooms are decorated to represent past and present pets. 

“We just wanted to change the culture of [corporate veterinary clinics],” Jessica Trice, dvm, cofounder, said in a previous interview with dvm360. “A lot of times, owners are nervous, and when the owners are nervous because their pets are sick…they visit the vet. So we wanted to…calm them [and] make them feel at ease so that their pets could feel that way as well. [Pets] feed off their owner’s emotions, so when it comes to wining and dining, [we give] owners some wine and some spa-like environment. It creates that relaxation for everyone.” 

Besides their wine bar staple piece, the Vetique team decorated the ceilings with large gold chandeliers leading clients to the exam rooms, with “2 grand Sputnik statement pieces” resting over the receptionist area. For staff wellness, they have a large flat-screen television for staff to watch during breaks and a Peloton bike to promote health. Team members also can use the comfort room, which contains mood lighting, speakers, and candles.

Pure Paws Veterinary Care, our final 2024 merit winner, renovated the first floor of a 9-floor high-rise building in the middle of New York City. The team focused on a clean and simple design featuring ceiling treatments and a tile focal point at the coffee station. They took inspiration from the colors of the Hudson River to provide a tranquil place for clients and their pets on one of New York’s busiest streets. 

To help keep the hospital peaceful, the team designed a sound wall from floor to ceiling separating the back and front of the house to minimize noise. The surgical suites were built to comply with rigorous sterile standards and protocols, and there are no horizontal surfaces on which dust and dirt can accumulate. The isolation rooms are separate and have separate entrances to prevent the spread of disease; they are also negatively pressurized to keep germs from spreading throughout the hospital. Additionally, the walls in the clinic were designed to be durable and scrubbable for intense cleaning procedures. 

The clinic’s walls contain pet-friendly photographs throughout the 5 exam rooms, back-of-house treatment spaces, dental treatment rooms, and other spaces. Although the clinic is small, its design enables clients, patients, and staff to move through the space comfortably and avoid any layout headaches.

Eight hospitals from around the country are awarded for innovative, high-tech, and soothing environments

Meet the 2024 Hospital Design 360 Competition Merit Winners

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), a nonprofit animal shelter and rescue organization in Austin, Texas, has been researching innovative treatment methods for cats infected with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), in collaboration with the University of Florida (UF) Shelter Medicine program in Gainesville.

Until this year, there were no publicly available treatments for FIP, a disease which has long been considered one of the most fatal and untreatable diseases in cats, especially in shelters.

APA! hosts one of the largest adoption programs for cats with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). As part of their collaboration with the UF research team, they compared the response to FIP treatment in shelter cats with and without FeLV co-infection.

 Previously, FeLV-positive cats were considered untreatable for FIP. However, to date, APA! has already treated more than 250 cats, most of which are also FeLV-positive. The shelter has seen 75% of cats survive the 6-month treatment and observation period, and FeLV co-infection does not appear to affect treatment response rates.

“We are incredibly proud of the role APA! has played in bringing this treatment to fruition,” Alexis Bardzinski, DVM, medical director at APA!, said in a news release.

“Our mission has always been to save as many lives as possible, especially the most vulnerable populations of pets. This breakthrough treatment is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the field of animal welfare.”

FIP, a viral and often deadly disease, is a feline coronavirus (FCoV) variant, found worldwide in both domestic and wild cats. FIP occurs when FCoV, commonly found in the feline gastrointestinal tract, undergoes genetic mutations causing it to impact cells of the immune system, rather than just intestinal cells. Although 50% to 90% of cats test positive for FCoV-specific antibodies, less than 5% of FCoV-infected cats develop FIP.

Historically, prognosis for FIP is poor. Up to 95% of cats diagnosed with FIP die without treatment.

 Clinical signs vary depending on which organs are involved. However, the most common clinical signs are lethargy, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, inappetence, weight loss, and deteriorating hair coat.

FIP disease generally presents as either effusive or non-effusive, commonly referred to as wet or dry forms, respectively.

 The wet form is more common, accounting for approximately 80% of cases.

 In the wet form, excess fluid is produced in the abdomen and/or chest of the infected cat. In the dry form, inflammatory cells accumulate in various organs, including the liver, kidneys, eyes, and brain.

 Characteristics of both the wet and dry forms are usually present, to some extent, in all cases.

Cats shed particles of the virus in feces, and fecal-oral transmission is common, making litter boxes an important source of infection. It’s also commonly transmitted through saliva, and therefore through mutual grooming, sharing a food bowl, sneezing, and general close contact. These factors increase the likelihood of infection in multiple-cat households and high-density facilities, like shelters. FIP most commonly affects cats under 3 years old. Pure bred cats, geriatric cats, and male cats are all more prone the development of the disease.

Veterinarians in the United States gained access to an oral treatment for FIP in June 2024, when 

 to both veterinary offices and individual patients by Stokes Pharmacy.

, to discuss this therapy and other advancements in the treatment of FIP.

APA! has been treating shelter cats for FIP since 2019.

 Being proactive about stress management, making use of foster care, and swiftly moving cats out of shelters and into adoptive homes are steps that APA! encourages other shelters to take to make a difference in FIP treatment.
