The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) issued a warning to pet owners about the risks of raw pet food in cats after several indoor cats in Oregon were diagnosed with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) starting earlier this month.

The owners of the infected cats, after consulting with their veterinarians, elected to euthanize each of the cats due to the severity of their illness. After looking into potential sources of the illness, officials discovered that all of the sick feline patients ate the same brand of raw pet food, manufactured by Wild Coast, LLC, before becoming sick.

The illnesses were reported to the ODA, prompting the ODA to collect samples from the affected cats, pre- and post- mortem, and from the open pet food containers. The samples were then sent for testing at Oregon Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratories at Oregon State University and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), confirming the presence of HPAI in the both the cat and food samples.

In response to the findings, ODA and WSDA issued a public health notice and the WSDA conducted further testing on unopened containers of the food. Both departments are urging cat owns to check the lot numbers on Wild Coast, LLC products at home. The specific lot numbers are:

“We are writing to you regarding a developing situation concerning H5N1 and the affected cats in the Portland area. On February 7th, [WSDA] notified us of a house cat that tested positive for H5N1, with a potential link to our food. Open containers from the household were tested and came back as non-negative and negative,” said Tyler Duncan, founder of Wild Coast Pet Foods, in an organizational statement.

“A non-negative result in a diagnostic test, indicates that the test produced a result that isn’t clearly positive or negative. It suggests something might be present, but the test lacks the specificity or sensitivity to confirm it. It’s an indeterminate result, requiring further investigation. In further investigation twelve additional sealed samples were then purchased at retail locations including the same lot code that came back as non-negative from the open container test (Lot #22660). These results yielded one non – negative result (Lot #22664) and the rest negative including from Lot #22660.We were given this information late Thursday 2/13. On Friday 2/14 the WSDA and ODA made a public health warning advising customers to not feed these two lots,” he continued.

If any pets have consumed the product from Wild Coast LLC and is presenting with these symptoms, WSDA and ODA encourages pet owners to call their veterinarian immediately. 

At this time, there have been no human infections linked to handling raw pet food products. They normally become infected when the virus enters their eyes, nose, our mouth, such has handling contaminated pet food or touching a surface that is contaminated, especially without thoroughly washing their hands after coming into contact with contaminated surfaces. Anyone suspected of coming into contact with H5N1 should contact their healthcare provide and monitor themselves for symptoms such as:

For veterinary professionals, avian influenza is a notifiable disease by the World Organization for Animal Health. Professionals should immediately report any suspected cases of HPAI in any bird, or of H5 or H7 low pathogenic avian influenza, to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the USDA and the applicable state animal health official(s). If a case comes in after hours and on weekend’s professionals should call the USDA foreign animal disease hotline at 866-536-7593.

Moving forward, I am committed to keeping you promptly informed on the evolving situation and will be updating our website as the information becomes available,” Duncan concluded.

I was captivated by dentistry soon after attending my first dental wet lab in 1986. One of the best talks I remember at our annual veterinary dental forum was given by a boarded veterinary dentist, who shared blunders he made along the way to becoming better. I hope you can learn from some of my slipups and solutions.

Ineffectiveness of pulse therapy against biofilms

The use of pulse antibiotic therapy for oral infections is now considered inappropriate. In the 1990s, I worked with another veterinarian to spread the word about using pulse therapy, prescribing a dental antibiotic the first 5 days of the month to treat periodontal disease. The recommendation caught on like wildfire.

Unfortunately, the most significant pitfall of pulse antibiotic therapy in oral infections is its ineffectiveness against biofilms. A dental antibiotic is prescribed for the first 5 days of the month. Pulse therapy is unlikely to achieve the sustained high concentrations needed to penetrate these biofilms effectively. It fails to address the primary cause of periodontal disease, which requires mechanical plaque removal—systemic antibiotics should only be recommended for specific cases, such as patients with compromised immune systems.

Early in my dental career, I learned a crucial lesson about the importance of comprehensive examinations. Failing to conduct a meticulous tooth-by-tooth assessment and maintain detailed charts resulted in overlooked pathologies and missed opportunities to enhance patient care. This experience  highlighted the critical nature of thorough documentation in dentistry. Over time, I have come to appreciate the significant advantages of electronic dental charting over traditional paper methods. Electronic charting offers several key benefits:

Separated tooth roots during extraction can occur secondary to excessive force and inadequate alveolar bone removal, creating root fragments. Unless addressed, these can lead to ongoing pain and infection. To avoid this:

Ensure instruments are sharpened before each extraction case (

If you choose not to use the crown removal technique, create a full-thickness flap that extends beyond the mucogingival junction. Use a sharpened periosteal elevator (flat Molt 2/4) to reflect the flap carefully (

Removing the protrusion of the dental alveolus after maxillary canine extraction in cats can cause lip entrapment and trauma. If this occurs, either extraction or crown reduction and restoration of the mandibular canine will eliminate the entrapment (

When excising oral tumors, failing to achieve adequate margins can lead to rapid recurrence. Here is the solution:

Obtain preoperative imaging (CT or MRI) for proper surgical planning.

Plan 0.5- to 1-cm clean surgical margins in all directions for benign oral tumors and at least 2-cm clean margins for malignant tumors (

Consider adjunctive treatments (radiation, chemotherapy) for high-grade tumors.

Creating an oronasal communication is a complication during maxillary extractions, especially canine teeth. To avoid oronasal fistula formation, design a large flap that can be closed without tension and use careful elevation techniques to prevent excessive force (

Researchers from Colorado State University and Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance collaborated to survey employees and volunteers at zoos throughout the United States to learn more about the experiences they face with burnout and animal losses.

 the research emphasizes the need for zoos to create comprehensive grief-affirming policies and greater access to mental health resources. The researchers also added that communication protocols for compassionate and timely responses to animal loss can foster empathetic culture within the organization that support staff, volunteer wellbeing, and effective animal care.

The experiences of loss in participants working in organizations that do not have supportive structures resulted in anxiety, guilt, hurt, or shame, but those who had a grief-affirming culture held more positive views. In both cases, the participants provided suggestions for ways to better improve the zoo industry to be more supportive of staff.

“Zoo professionals and volunteers frequently face significant emotional strain due to animal losses, yet structured organizational support for processing grief remains limited,” Nichole Nageotte, PhD, author of the study adjunct and instructor at Unity Environmental University.

There is poor grief support in some zoos located in the US, leaving staff feeling like they are receiving limited empathy from leadership, burnout, and cannot openly express grief after the death of an animal they developed a close emotional bond to, according to the researchers.

The survey was completed by 1695 zoo professionals, and researchers analyzed open-ended responses from 182 participants, 135 animal care and health professionals, 12 volunteers, and 35 additional staff.

 Zoo professionals shared in the responses that they have individuals within their organization that provide a safe space for them to discuss loss and grief. Others expressed a desire for a culture where they can ask for support, take a minute to catch their breath, and have access to grief resources tailored to these professionals.

Zoo employees and volunteers also want opportunities for the team to take part in planning a ‘good death’ or transfer, which would allow individuals within the organization to say goodbye, take photos, or gather samples from the animal, such as fur, feathers, or paw/footprints.

In response to the responses, the researchers say there were requests for transparency in the case of a traumatic death. Employees and volunteers could be offered time and space to debrief with the team about the events that led up to the animal’s death. This will give these professionals a space to be able to process their feelings, if they would like.

Researchers have a plethora of recommendations for an industry level response to help zoo management create supportive infrastructures and resources to improve wellbeing and retention within the industry. An initial step they recommend is the creation of zoo animal grief resources. Organizations can set up advisory or special interest groups to meet on a regular basis to talk about grief culture, share resources, and promote self-compassion around loss.

Another suggestion the researchers presented was the development of an online database of grief resources so best practices examples of memorial activities can be shared as well as a directory of zoo counselors and professionals interested in mentoring other professionals about experiences this type of loss.

Relief medicine has risen in recent years and projects an alternative to traditional animal health care practice that is thriving on modern career ideologies and lifestyle culture.

Although relief work may not be the best fit for every practicing veterinarian, it is proving to be a viable career path for many practitioners. Over the course of a decade, ending in 2018, relief practice grew from approximately 1800 veterinarians to approximately 2300 veterinarians, numbers that track with the overall population of practicing veterinarians that is also increasing.

“What we’re seeing is a shift in how veterinarians approach their careers,” Michael Raphael, CEO of IndeVets, a veterinary relief service provider, said in a 

Relief veterinary work refers to temporary employment that can range from short- to long-term assignments. Relief doctors support practices by providing patient care and maintaining operational continuity, either through an agency or as independent contractors. They may cover for veterinarians on family leave or vacation, assist with increased workload demands by offering additional expertise, or respond to urgent situations requiring general or specialized skills.

In a 2023 survey of relief or mobile veterinarians, for which results were recently released, 444 participants responded, sharing their reasons for making the shift from previous jobs. Administration, hospital culture, leadership, and workplace scheduling were all contributing factors.

Anita Patel, DVM, director of clinical excellence-southeast for IndeVets, is a mother and relief practitioner in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. She worked as an associate veterinarian in a busy, small animal practice with multiple doctors before pivoting her career to relief practice when she experienced increasing burnout. “I loved the practice I was at, I loved the people that I worked with, I loved the clinical growth that I had, [but] work-life balance just really became something that I wasn’t getting. [I was] constantly feeling like my personal life came second to my professional life,” Patel said.

Like Patel, Raphael said, veterinarians increasingly want to have greater control over their work hours and schedule. “Many feel that traditional associate roles don’t give them that flexibility and respect for life outside of being a vet they need (and deserve). Relief work often seems to be the only viable solution,” he said. “There are many veterinarians who are just looking for a new way to practice. They are looking for a clinically led team where they can grow professionally without the constraints of a traditional associate role.”

Greg Echols, DVM, operates his own relief veterinarian service and recently spoke about it on dvm360’s 

 “It feels great,” he said. “I don’t really have to ask for time off. It’s definitely more freedom. It’s less burden [than what I experienced as an associate veterinarian], and [I'm] able to work wherever I want to work.”

Andrew Findlaytor, DVM, was an independent relief veterinarian prior to joining the team at Roo, a digital marketplace for matching veterinarians and technicians with relief jobs, where he now serves as chief veterinarian. He said a desire to keep learning and curiosity for how different hospitals operated led him to relief work. “I figured working in more places would give me more experience, so I set out on this quest to work at every hospital I could find,” he said in a 

“I found, in my journeys, every hospital has something that they do uniquely well, that no one else has figured out. And every hospital has something they struggle with, no matter how big and fancy or small. Everyone’s got their own thing they’re trying to solve,” Findlaytor added.

Although many relief veterinarians rely on service providers like Roo and IndeVets, 210 of 239 respondents of the 2023 survey reported it easy to find relief work, with many citing personal connections, word of mouth, introductions, and personal inquiries as driving sources. Most relief veterinarians surveyed also indicated they have a regular client base of hospitals and shelters.

Patel said that although it’s nice to have the opportunity to work in different hospitals all the time, it is also good to have her current long-term placement, which has her working in the same hospital every week. “It’s kind of nice sometimes, being able to pick. If I want that continuity and consistency, I can do that, while still getting to practice in a lot of different practices,” Patel said.

Marisa Brunetti, VMD, chief veterinary officer with IndeVets, said she is currently a relief practitioner in a hospital that formerly employed her, and she is enjoying the opportunity to continue engaging with familiar clients and patients. Relief veterinarians who are more interested in practicing across the spectrum of care in a variety of settings from shelter medicine to high-end clinics, like Findlaytor, or who want to primarily work a specialty capacity also find opportunities. “We have lots of doctors that maybe just want to do surgery, and they can't do that every day in one practice. And so they get a chance to do something very specific that they love [through relief work],” Brunetti said.

Compensation for relief veterinarians and technicians varies. How it compares to more traditional roles can even more be tricky to quantify, according to Raphael. “There are so many contributing factors to consider, including out-of-pocket expenses the relief vet must bear, production requirements of the associate, years of experience, and location,” he added.

However, according to Roo, its top-earning relief veterinarians saw more than $300,000 in 2024, with the assumption that they were working at a full-time pace. The average 9-hour shift of a relief veterinarian working through Roo pays $1290, according to the company.

Although relief service agencies may also offer benefits packages, independent contractors are responsible for securing health insurance on their own, which also factors into compensation variables. However, the latter also has a say in what they are paid. “If there’s a clinic that needs me for a certain number of hours, I can make my own rates,” Echols said in his interview.

Veterinarians working in the relief space also may face potential drawbacks to relief practice. The 2023 study’s authors found new hospital protocols, little support from colleagues, and a lack of job security to be challenges for some respondents.

 Experts also noted that independent relief workers are also spending time securing their next placements and managing administrative tasks such as invoicing, in addition to practicing medicine.

Still, Raphael said hospitals can rely on relief veterinarians to deliver expert medicine. “Oftentimes, this helps those clinics prevent burnout and grow their practices with our highly credentialed vets,” he said.

We're fairly new to the vet world. We've only been talking to vets, probably for the last, in a serious way, for the last year years. So, as we get more awareness, we have more vets using this with spectacular results. The kind of results that Tom gets—he, of course, will not brag about them, but I will. We see, time and time again, he gets results that other vets can't. You know, he very often gets dogs from other vets, who they've sort of given up. And you know, there was one you were talking about yesterday.

 Yes. Yesterday, I was talking about a dog that had a mysterious cervical nerve impingement that we could not replicate. We couldn't find a reason why on an MRI or anything like that, the neurologist said I don't know what we can do with this. And we actually started working on this with the laser. We added some ice to it as well to help reduce that inflammation. And within just a few treatments, we were able to get that inflammation down which then released the dog to have a better range of motion with its neck. Once that started happening, the dog realized it didn't hurt to move, and it got to a situation where it no longer wanted to lay in the bed all day long. It wanted to get up. and within, I believe it was 8 treatments, 9 treatments with the laser we had that dog outside running up a hill like it was a puppy.

Yeah, that was incredible. I've seen that—where this dog literally could not walk to its bed and then was sprinting up the hill. I mean, you're bringing dogs basically back to life.

 I really appreciate that. The whole reason why I love to focus on rehabilitation is because I get to help them down that journey. The laser is the key component in my toolbox. Because of the pain mitigation, the anti-inflammatory properties, and also how it speeds healing. The thing is rarely do you ever come across a product that is actually affordable and over delivers what they were actually producing, and that's what I found in Avant and I wouldn't go back to anything else.

 We’re glad to hear that. So, one of the things that I know you love is all of the protocols that we have.

 We've got 250 protocols. We've got special vet protocols for dogs, small animals, horses. And tell me about how quickly you can get results for this?

 It's not only quick to get results, but as you know, unlike a human patient where you can tell them to stay still, every vet out there knows our animals and our patients are wiggly. So, it's not only about the number of protocols you have, it is how fast you can get to them. That's why there's a favorites button in here that I utilize every single day. I'm able to pin the protocols to favorites and I'm able to get that result right away. Usually within 60 seconds of picking this device up I'm lasering. And the great thing is because of the safety of this laser, I don't have to worry about burning the animal or burning its coat or anything like that. It also gives my technicians a lot of confidence and flexibility to be able to use this.


You know, one of the key components to this laser is you designed it with a practitioner in mind. And you see how tiny it is. But here's the thing: the practitioner is very busy. We as vets are surfing on a very high wave every single day, going from appointment to appointment as fast as we can, getting records in, making sure the medications are right, all of those things. This means our time is extremely limited. The safety and the simplicity of this device allows you to hand it to your technician. Without fear they can use it, while you're busy doing something else that you need to get done as of a vet. So, I appreciate the fact that it was designed with that practitioner in mind in the application of the real world. When it gets too busy and the fur is flying out there, the reality is this: in a technician’s hands you know that’s it's trusted device. You know the animals not going to be hurt, the technicians not going to be hurt, and you know the treatments going to be right.

 So, we know that you were used to using Class IV lasers.

Yeah, as a lot of vets are used to that. And then you came across this, which is a Class 3B laser. You had to sort of get your head around that. Tell us why you switched and how you found it works.

 So, it really confused me, because going from a Class IV laser I thought for sure that it wouldn't be powerful enough, in those words, to where it would get down to the joint capsule. It wouldn't get to the IVDD spaces that I needed to get to reduce those nerves and that sort of thing. So, when I started seeing the results—that they were as good or better than I expected—I actually gave you guys a call and said, “I need more education about this, because I'm not sure why this product is working better than advertised.” And I realized that this is a light wave. When you tune it properly, it gets the right results. When you tune that, just like tuning a radio station, you can hear it clearly. The cells hear it clearly. And with that, the message it's telling them is to reduce inflammation, to reduce pain, and start the ATP process.

 So, how about the speed? How long is your treatment?

Normally my protocols last anywhere from four to five minutes, but what I love about this is the portability of being able to move it around to different places. I can actually extend my protocols to cover other areas. That animal may be there for a cruciate repair, but chances are it's got some inflammation in its shoulders as well. Because it has to balance that weight somewhere. So, the ability to be able to treat both things and within the same protocol, and moving around so easily, and the literature backs it up—that over range of motion, laser is more effective.

 How has this little laser affected your business?

You know, Pamela, this laser has changed my business completely. What has happened over the past three years, four years, is I've gone from being mobile-based to having my own facility. When I was mobile, I was treating about 12 to 15 dogs a week at the max. Now I'm averaging 25 to 30 a day.

 I have, and I have to believe that it's part and parcel because of the process, but the product that I have to use every single day, every single patient gets this laser. So, there's no deniability that this is the key component in the factor.

We like to hear that. Tom specializes in small animals, but we also have a number of vets who are using this for forces. One in particular is using it for all the top show horses.
