A targeted formulation of the drug rapamycin, also known as sirolimus, has been shown to reverse hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in cats, making it the first treatment to successfully treat HCM in felines. The drug’s major success in clinical trials has put it on track to receive expanded conditional approval from the FDA in March 2025, with a final pivotal study still in progress.

“Expanded conditional approval allows drugs that are undergoing their final clinical trial assessment and are supported by strong enough data and pilot studies to receive FDA permission to use the drug while the pivotal clinical trial is finishing,” Joshua Stern, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Cardiology), associate dean for research and graduate studies at North Carolina State University (NC State) College of Veterinary Medicine, and lead of the research on the novel therapy, said in a news release.

 “We’re enrolling cats in one of the largest feline clinical trials ever conducted now.”

The final study is being conducted at more than 20 sites throughout the United States, with researchers aiming to enroll 300 client-owned cats.

 For the study, participants will be screened for a period of up to 14 days and will thereafter undergo a 12-month, once-weekly dosing period with 5 post-enrollment study visits.

HCM is a serious and potentially fatal form of heart disease that causes the heart muscle to thicken, impairing the heart’s ability to pump blood. As the disease progresses, it can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs; arterial thromboembolism, where blood clots obstruct flow to muscles and organs; congestive heart failure; and rhythm disturbances that can lead to sudden death.

 Affecting approximately 15% of cats, the condition is the most common type of cardiac disease in felines.

Certain breeds, such as Maine Coons and Ragdolls, are genetically predisposed to developing the disease due to findings of mutations in the cardiac protein myosin binding protein C in affected cats.

 The disease has been diagnosed in feline patients as young as 4 months and as old as 16 years old. Still, a definitive cause of feline HCM has not been found.

Until now, there has been no therapeutic treatment for the disease—this may be changing as the novel therapy awaits conditional approval from the FDA and reaches the veterinary market thereafter. Stern predicts that the drug may become available to veterinarians for prescribing in June.

The research has been a collaboration between Stern and his team, and TriviumVet, an animal health company based in Ireland who funded the research and has patented the delayed-release formulation of rapamycin.

 Both parties have worked to further the understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of HCM to develop the rapamycin drug specifically for cats.

According to NC State, Stern's lab discovered that rapamycin could slow or reverse the thickening of the heart muscle in felines with HCM before patients showed any symptoms of the disease.

 The drug functions by inhibiting the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, a central regulator of metabolism and physiology.

“This is a game-changer for us in terms of the reality of having something on the market that actually treats the underlying pathology of HCM, rather than just treating symptoms when they eventually develop,” Stern, the 2024 recipient of the Career Achievement in Feline Research Award from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, said in the release.

For the final pivotal study, due to an overwhelming amount of owner queries, participation is restricted to those with direct referrals from veterinarians. Veterinarians interested in referring a feline patient with HCM for participation in the study can register their patient by visiting 

“Having a useful therapeutic will completely result in a paradigm shift for veterinarians,” concluded Stern.

 “We’ve been playing defense against this disease for many, many years. We’re gonna go on the offensive now.”

Novel therapy protects against 6 parasites

Flies can cause stress, reduce feed intake, and spread diseases in cattle, making them a major health concern. Without proper management, flies can have a major impact on cattle health, comfort, and productivity, according to a Texas A&M Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) report, where Eric Kneese, DVM, clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M VMBS and Dr Donald Bruce Lawhorn endowed faculty fellow in swine medicine at the department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, provided information on the different flies that affect cattle, fly-resistant cattle, prevention and more.

With flies varying in species, each type affects cattle differently, according to Kneese, and the 4 most common flies affecting herds comprise

 Although they do not bite, house flies feed on manure, spreading bacteria that lead to infections and contributing to unsanitary conditions. With a dull gray color, these flies are usually 6 mm long with reddish, separated eyes and 4 dark, longitudinal stripes that run along their thorax.

 These flies target a cow’s legs and lower body and are known for their painful bites. Just 5 to 10 flies per leg can cause restlessness, decreased feeding efficiency, and weight loss. Stable flies are gray, approximately 7 to 8 mm long, and have a similar appearance to house flies but with a “checkerboard” pattern on their ventral abdomen. These flies also have recognizable biting mouthparts.

 This species gathers on a cow’s back and sides, leading to irritation, decreased weight gain, and a general decline in health. These gray-black flies are 3 to 4 mm, resembling stable flies while being more slender and approximately half their size.

 These insects feed on eye and nasal secretions, making them a major vector for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), also known as pinkeye, which is both contagious and painful among cattle. These flies are dark gray, 6 to 8 mm, and resemble house flies with a slightly larger and darker build.

Other flies that affect cattle include horse flies and deer flies, both of which are dark gray to dak brown in color. These flies feed on the back, neck and sides of cattle. With a painful bite, these species can cause 100 ml of blood loss when 20 to 30 of these flies feed on a cow for more than 6 hours.

Horse flies are approximately 25 mm long with clear wings, while deer flies tend to be 6 mm to 10 mm long with a dark stripe across their wings. They can cause decreased weight gain in affected cattle.

The second point that Kneese shared is that different cattle may have different susceptibility to flies. For example, cattle with darker coats tend to be more bothered by flies compared to light colored cattle.

Additionally, white-coated Holstein dairy cows are more resistant to horn flies than dark-coated cows.

“Research has shown that Bos indicus breeds, such as Brahman-influenced cattle, tend to be more resistant to flies than Bos taurus breeds, like British cattle,” Kneese said in the report.

 “This is because of specific physiological and behavioral traits that help them naturally fend off pests.”

Resistance to flies can vary even within a single breed of cattle. “A study on Chianina cows found that certain individuals had over 4 times as many flies as their more resistant counterparts,” added Kneese.

 “This suggests that factors beyond breed alone—such as individual genetic differences—play a key role in fly susceptibility.”

Cattle owners often make the mistake of waiting too long to implement fly control measures, according to the Texas A&M report.

 “If you wait until flies are already a problem, management becomes much more difficult,” said Kneese in the report.

 “It’s always best to start early, stay consistent, and use a multimodal approach; combining insecticides, environmental management, biological control, and physical barriers.”

Kneese also suggests feed-through control, where insect growth regulators (IGRs) are added to pastures, passing through the cow’s system and into manure to stop larvae from developing into adult flies. Insecticides, which come as pour-on treatments, ear tags, sprays, and dust bags, are another control method. Sprays allow for quick, targeted treatment, according to VMBS. Meanwhile, dust bags coat cattle with insecticide as they pass through.

Environmental management also plays a crucial role in fly preventing. “Flies lay eggs in moist, organic matter, like manure and decaying plant material,” Kneese said in the report.

 “Regularly cleaning stalls, pens, and pastures makes the area less hospitable for flies, reducing overall populations.”

Moreover, biological control offers natural protection from flies by using predators like parasitic wasps, which lay eggs on developing fly larvae, killing them before they mature. Other natural predators, such as beetles and birds, also help reduce fly populations.

In addition, physical barriers and traps serve as another line of defense, according to VMBS.

 Although fly masks are often used for horses, they can also be applied to cattle to shield them from face flies. This barrier lowers irritation and the risk of eye infections. Sticky ribbons and mechanical traps, meanwhile, help catch flies.

For prevention, Kneese advises stocking up on fly control products and maintaining clean pastures and barns. “Having insecticides, traps, and other fly control tools on hand will ensure a quick response when flies start emerging,” he said.

 “Maintaining a clean environment will help prevent fly populations from surging when warm weather returns.”

“Successful fly control is about prevention, consistency, and adaptation,” Kneese continued.

“Cattle owners should work with veterinarians and extension specialists to develop a customized fly plan based on their location, cattle type, and management style.”

Protecting cattle from flies: Species identification and control methods

A new treatment protocol guide for diagnosing and treating joint disease in dogs has been launched by American Regent Animal Health. Aimed at veterinary practices, the guide provides a framework for the creation of a standardized approach to managing osteoarthritis (OA), and provides resources for educating clients.

The protocol guide was developed in collaboration with Denis Marcellin-Little, DEDV, DACVS, DACVSMR, DECVS, professor of orthopedics and interim chair of the surgical and radiological sciences department at University of California, Davis. “Structure and consistency are very important,” Marcellin-Little said in a news release.

 “By emphasizing a practical, step-by-step framework, we’re moving beyond philosophical guidelines to something that truly helps practitioners and pet owners manage OA over the long term.”

Veterinarian support for canine OA protocols was demonstrated in a 2024 survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in collaboration with Marcellin-Little and American Regent, the maker of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (Adequan Canine) intramuscular injection, which is FDA-approved for management of OA signs in dogs. Survey responses from hundreds of veterinarians showed 95% agreed a canine protocol was needed, which Marcellin-Little has described as a “cry for help.”

Citing the “overwhelming” majority of veterinarians who indicated organized protocols dictating OA management are necessary, Marcellin-Little discussed the reasoning for these protocols in a lecture at the 2024 Veterinary Meeting & Expo in Orlando, Florida.

 “We want to improve the logistics of managing OA, make it less random, make it more standardized, more efficient. We want better science,” he said.

AAHA survey respondents indicated that OA protocols should include elements of management, education and science. Top responses included early disease management such as repairing cartilage health or slowing degradation, mid-stage management, disease prevention and understanding OA management products and strategies including when to implement them. Providing client education guidelines and resources was also highly sought-after by survey respondents.

Four in 10 veterinarians surveyed in 2024 also agreed that their practice currently has an OA protocol in place, while 7 in 10 survey respondents said they have an OA protocol for senior dogs.

 “Most agree that a protocol is realistic,” Marcellin-Little said in his lecture.

With the new protocol guide, American Regent developed a framework for canine OA management geared towards veterinary practices. The guide features a 3-step plan that aims to help veterinary teams develop and implement an OA treatment protocol in their clinic. The plan includes the following

Recommendations for lifestyle modifications and adjunct therapies.

Often, dogs are showing significant signs of pain by the time joint disease is diagnosed. At that point, OA damage can be detrimental to mobility, which is why the protocol guide features a proactive approach for early detection. Incorporating dog owners into the OA detection team is recommended, and the guide provides resources to help veterinarians educate their clients about identifying signs of the disease. Client resources include a “Symptoms and Stages of OA” poster, “Take the OA Quiz” window clings and a personalized treatment tear pad.

“By engaging pet owners in the process, they can work together with their veterinarian to spot the subtle signs sooner and take steps that will make a real difference in the well-being of their dog with OA,” Paris Revoir, DVM, professional service veterinarian for American Regent, said in a news release.

Although canine arthritis presents differently in each case, its’ potential to advance to debilitation and mobility loss if left untreated remains consistent, according to American Regent. However, the new OA protocol guide and client resources may help veterinarians and pet owners better detect signs of the disease and early in its onset.

New guide designed to assist veterinary practices with canine OA protocols

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) recently published its Equine Viral Hepatitis Guidelines to provide equine veterinarians comprehensive information and instructions concerning clinical signs, diagnostics, risk factors, transmission, and other considerations for 2 viral causes of liver damage in equine patients: Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) and equine hepacivirus (EqHV).

“Both viruses can be present [horse is PCR positive] and not actively causing disease. Serial testing and early testing can help veterinarians interpret whether either virus is likely to be the cause of hepatitis,” said guidelines author Joy Tomlinson, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, assistant professor of large animal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, in an organizational release.

“If you diagnose a horse with hepatitis, I recommend either submitting the serum PCR right away or saving serum from the first visit in your freezer,” she added. “If you decide to pursue viral testing later, having that sample to compare to will be very helpful.”

According to the release, the guideline documents incorporate updates to guidance that was originally published for EqPV-H in 2021 as well as new and corresponding guidance for EqHV, which has been recently recognized as a cause of chronic hepatitis.

 The Equine Viral Hepatitis Guidelines were approved and reviewed by the AAEP Infectious Disease Committee and board of directors.

Equine patients infected with EqPV-H are asymptomatic, but a small percentage will develop clinical hepatitis, and will demonstrate one or more of the following

Neurologic signs (altered behavior, head pressing, staggering, blindness)

Elevated liver enzyme activities on bloodwork, especially AST, SDH, GLDH 

Elevated blood ammonia and bile acid concentrations

Death (usually within 72 hours for severe cases)

The AAEP also noted that EqPV-H does not cause a fever in patients. Equine patients infected with EqPV-H typically remain asymptomatic carriers for years. Silent carriers have low levels of virus in their blood and pose little to no risk of natural transmission to other horses.

EqHV transmission has been linked to biologic products, particularly equine plasma products. Horses with acute EqHV infection typically do not show clinical signs of liver disease and clear the virus within 20 weeks. For horses with chronic EqHV infection, the infection will last longer than 6 months with a small percentage developing hepatitis over months to years. Clinical signs may include one of more of the following

Elevated liver enzyme activities on bloodwork, especially GGT

Like EqPV-H, EqHV does not cause fever in patients.

EqHV infects 40% of horses in the United States, versus 15% of EqPV-H, most clear the infection within 20 weeks and present with no clinical signs of liver or illness. Out of the horses infected with EqHV, 20% will develop persistent infection lasting longer than 6 months. The horses that are affected can also have subclinical infection or show signs of liver disease of varying severity. Treatment for clinically affected horses focuses on supportive care and managing liver dysfunction.

The skills that will be taught include stations for ultrasonic and hand scaling, dental bur identification, the importance and use of loupes, extraction tool identification, and more. The course is interactive for an additional fee of $70. Attendees can earn 3 continuing education credits for the 2:00 PM- 4:50 PM session.
